COMMUNITY SERVICE

Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions pride themselves on the fact that 80% of the money they raise goes to help people in the local area. The remaining 20% supports Lions projects such as the Belarus orphanage or in aid to people affected by natural disasters anywhere in the world.  Following the tsunami in 2004, members were able to arrange through a local Lions Club for two boats to be built in Sri Lanka which were then given to fishermen who had lost their livelihood in the disaster.  Other clubs in the District followed and a total of nine boats were donated.

Local young people who have been helped include Mia and Kai Appleby, the talented Herne Bay roller skating champions.  Young Herne Bay footballers have been provided with fleece tops and Hampton Girl Guides are being given ‘hoodies’ for their planned trip to Australia in 2010 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Guides.  Special computer equipment and hearing aids have been provided to young children to help them attend mainstream schools.  The elderly are not forgotten and Christmas presents are given every year to the residents at the Ladesfield Care Home.  Over 50 hampers are supplied to needy families and individuals in the two towns and each year in late summer tea parties are held for elderly people.  One local group helped by the Lions is our own lifeboat crew.  We were delighted to present them with a new set of boots.  The club is always ready to consider an appeal for help and tries to give as much assistance as possible.

Recently President Maureen and club members presented a cheque to the Troop Comander of Challenger who help children with behavioural and learning difficulties

WHITSTABLE & HERNE BAY LIONS CLUB TO THE RESCUE

In a front page article in the Whitstable Times prior to Christmas, Whitstable Umbrella Centre Oxford Street Whitstable pleaded for help in obtaining a large Christmas tree for their forecourt. This has been a feature outside this building for many years, but due to cut backs they were unable to get one.

Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club where very pleased to assist Whitstable Umbrella Centre in obtaining a Christmas tree for their forecourt. The tree in question was donated by Chris West the Town Manager to the Oxford Street trasers and the Whistle Stop Restaurant; but because of the shortness of time it was difficult to arrange their proposed event the tree became redundant. After a brief discussion it was agreed that the tree could be transferred to the Umbrella Centre, this was followed by a phone call to SERCO for them to arrange the transportation, erection and dressing with lights and ths was done in less than a week. Thank you SERCO for your prompt action.

The majority of cost for all the work will be covered by Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club and Chris West the Town Manager, The Umbrella Centre and by the a donation by the Whistle Stop Restaurant.

In the spirit of Christmas if there are any readers/organistions who would like to contribute towards the substantial costs of the exercise I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by all parties concerned.

DISTRICT & INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY THE CLUB INCLUDE:

Youth

This is one of the core areas for Lions as the youth of today are the future. Currently we support two football teams, one from Tankerton and one from Herne Bay in the Lions Youth Under 14s Football competition. The club supports the Lions’ Young Musician of the Year, the Peace Poster and the Young Ambassador of the 21st Century; all these are District, National or International competitions.  Donations are regularly given to local youth groups such as the Sea Scouts and Guides and also to young people working abroad

SightFirst Campaigns

After Helen Keller asked the Lions to be her ‘Knights of the Blind’ back in 1925, Lions have always taken special interest in sight problems.  They invented the white cane used by so many blind people.  They have raised millions of pounds through the SightFirst campaigns, have carried out over 35 million cataract operations, eliminated river blindness in South America and greatly reduced it in Africa.

Lions Hospice

The only hospice in the world built by Lions, the EllenorLions Hospice in Northfleet provides day, respite and home care for people in the local area as well as caring for the terminally ill.  Originally built and maintained by five clubs in the Gravesend area, the Hospice now receives donations from Lions all over the SE District.

LIBRA

The Lions International Blood Research Appeal www.libra-kch.co.uk, was initiated in 1976 by Lion Ian Scott Mackenzie, the South-East District Governor. He was told of the urgent need for funding for the Haematology Unit at Kings College Hospital where invaluable research and treatment was being carried out in haemophilia, leukaemia and sickle cell disease.  Fund-raising began, essential equipment was purchased, a Charitable Trust was set up, and a close relationship, which exists to this day, developed between the Lions of 105-SE and the Haematology Unit.

Now the Blood Research team at Kings College Hospital is respected throughout the world for the progress it has achieved in providing solutions to blood related diseases. The Lions in South East England all support the LIBRA unit because it is their very own initiative and so many lives are being saved each day as a result of the work.  Every year the Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions, together with Thanet Lions, organise a spectacular Golf Day at one of Kent’s premier courses. This raises thousands of pounds exclusively for LIBRA.

LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation)

This is the fund which provides immediate relief to people affected by major disasters anywhere in the world.  The money goes direct to the local Lions clubs who know exactly how and where the money can provide the best relief. Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions regularly donates to this fund.

Message in a Bottle and Medic Alert

Club members spread the word about the ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme where details of people’s medication can be placed in a small plastic bottle kept in their fridge.  In emergency paramedics can access this information immediately, saving valuable time in treating the patient.  Lions also liaise with MedicAlert, whose bracelets and pendants give immediate information in an emergency.

Recycling medical equipment

Used spectacles, hearing aids and dental equipment are collected and reused in third world countries.

Belarus Shoe Box Appeal

Following the success of previous years & being the 25th Anniversary year of the disaster, the Lions Clubs of District 105SE 2011 Shoebox Appeal in partnership with Lions Belarus Trust are hoping for another sucessful appeal. Provides support for the families and children of Belarus affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station Disaster nearly 25 years ago. A huge lorry load of clothing and equipment is taken to Belarus each year by Lions from our District. In 2008 a new Lions club was formed and continues to care for families and orphans in the area.

Korle Bu

This is a unique venture between Moorfield Eye Hospital and the Lions Clubs of UK and Ireland if to build a teaching hospital in Korle Bu in Ghana.  At present there is very limited advanced eye care in that part of Africa and this will become a teaching centre of excellence.
